BATON ROUGE-In an attempt to create awareness of useful available resources that might be of help to those suffering from problems related to gambling, Gov. John Bel Edwards has announced March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month, while the Louisiana Department of Health's Office of Behavioral Health has hinted at the probable rise of gambling problems among the state's residents.
"Problem gambling touches the lives of all it affects — not just those with a gambling problem, but also their family and friends who want to help them conquer their disorder. The mental and emotional struggle to find healing takes a toll, but nobody has to face it alone. Louisianans can find help at no cost through the Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Behavioral Health,", secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, Dr. Courtney N. Phillips stated. "With the Problem Gamblers Helpline, counseling and treatment programs provided statewide by regional human services districts, the Office of Behavioral Health is ready to provide assistance. Take that first step toward recovery, and remember: you are not alone.", he added.
Problem gambling simply refers to all gambling behaviors that pose a threat to personal and family endeavors. A study by OBH in 2016 revealed that about 280, 000 Louisiana adults are probably into problem gambling, and its signs and symptoms include the following:
- Isolating yourself from family and friends as a result of gambling.
- Gambling when you're penniless.
- Spending more than the time allotted for gambling.
- Not being open about your gambling.
